SANKT WENDEL (WND)

State : Saarland

St-wende.kreis.jpg

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on February 25, 1965.

The present district of Sankt Wendel has a very complicated history. The district was divided in many small part, each of these parts belonged to a different territory. Therefore only the arms of the main territories are combined in the arms of the district. The blue lion is the lion of the Counts of Veldenz, the silver lion the lion of Nassau-Saarbrücken. The colours red and gold in the escutcheon are taken from the arms of Lorraine (see the arms of Saarland and Saarlouis). The fleur-de-lis is taken from the arms of the city of Sankt Wendel.
