Origin/meaning

Schlitz received city rights in the early 15th century, but the oldest seal dates from the 17th century. It shows the arms of the Lords (later Counts) of Schlitz, who ruled the area as vassals for the Imperial Abbey in Fulda. Later seals all showed the same composition. The above arms were granted in 1919, and the small shield symbolises the castles Ober- and Niederschlitz.
