Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1925.

Subate town is known since the 16th century, called then Subbath in German. It is located on the Subate lake.
In 1571 Lutheran inhabitants built a church, but the local landlord directed them to transfer the church to the Catholics. The Lutheran inhabitants abandoned the town and built a new town and a new church on the opposite side of the lake. The old town changed its name to Vecsubate (Old Subate) and the new town was called Jaunsubate (New Subate).
The Polish governor of Selija granted town rights to Vecsubate to support the Catholics. But wars and plagues stopped the growth of the town.

In 1894 both towns decided to join themselves, and the town Subate was again formed. In 1917 city rights were granted.

The arms show a pine tree symbolising the many forests in the area. Also, the inhabitants of the town were ethnically mixed: Latvians and Lithuanians. The fir-tree was chosen as a common sacred symbol for both nationalities, a symbol of Mother Earth.
