Origin/meaning
The name Surabaya (also Soerabaja, Surabaja), is derived from the words Soera (shark) and Bojo (crocodile), the arms thus show a shark and a crocodile.
In the late 19th century the name of the city was also supposedly derived from Soerâ-ing-bâjâ and as arms it was proposed to adopt a knight with a lotus flower. This proposal was never accepted.

Colonial arms
The arms were officially granted on September 28, 1931.
| Dutch | In azuur een zwemmende haai van zilver, de kop omlaag, en de staart opgebogen, waaronder een zwemmende omgewende krokodil van hetzelfde, de kop naar boven gericht en de staart opgebogen. Het schild gedekt met een gouden kroon van drie bladeren en twee paarlen. Schildhouders: twee leeuwen van goud getongd en genageld van keel.
