Coat of arms (crest) of Svendborg

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 28, 2008.

The arms are based on the old arms of the city, see below.

The previous arms were officially granted in 1938.

Coat of arms (crest) of Svendborg

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1362. The arms clearly show the city as a harbour and coastal town. The crescent and moon are the symbols for eternity. The arms probably date from the early14th century, but there are no seals or images known before 1362. During the centuries the style of the arms and seals have varied widely, but the composition as such remained the same.
