TELEMARK PROVINCE

Arms of Telemark

Official blazon

På gull botn ei oppveksande svart bondestridsøks

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 18, 1970.

The arms show a type of battle-axe. This specific type of battle-axe is known since the 15th century in Norway and many of these axes were decorated beautifully. As especially from the Telemark region many of these axes are known,an axe was chosen as the symbol for the province.
