Origin/meaning :
The arms show a broken wheel, the symbol of St. Catherine. St. Catherine was the patron saint of the hospital in Esslingen. In the 13th century the village was sold by the Counts of Tübingen to the hospital. It belonged to the hospital until 1802.
The size and shape of the wheel has varied widely, with 6, 8, 10 or 12 spokes, with the broken part on top, or, as above, facing right. The colours were defined in 1907.
After the merger with Rohr in 1936 some proposals were made to combine the two arms. The two arms were combined in the lower part, whereas the deer antler of Württemberg was placed in a chief. These were never officially adopted.
