VELZEKE-RUDDERSHOVE

Province : Oost-Vlaanderen
Incorporated into : 1970 Zottegem

Wapen van Velzeke-Ruddershove/Coat of arms (crest) of Velzeke-Ruddershove

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on September 2, 1818.

The arms are based on the 17th century seal of the council. The oldest seal is known form 1347 and shows St. Martin, cutting his cloak for a beggar. The 17th century seal showed a city gate with two small shields. The right shield is derived from the arms of the Lords of Zottegem. The left shield shows three lion heads, its origin is not clear.

As no original colours were known the arms were granted in the Dutch national colours in 1818. This was not corrected after the independence of Belgium in 1830.
