Portuguese Escudo de prata com uma torre torreada de negro, aberta e iluminada do campo, rematada por um homem saínte, vestido de vermelho e tocando uma buzina de ouro. A torre acompanhada por dois cachos de uvas de ouro, folhados e troncados de verde. Em chefe dois escudetes das armas antigas de Portugal. Em contra-chefe duas faixas ondadas de azul. Coroa mural de prata de cinco torres. Listel branco com a legenda a negro " VILA NOVA DE GAIA ".

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 28, 1984.

Vila Nova de Gaia is one of the oldest cities in Portugal, which is symbolised by the watchtower, flanked by the oldest arms of the Kings, a blue shield with eleven coins. The base shows the Douro river, whereas the two grape leaves symbolise that Vila Nova de Gaia is the centre of the port wine industry.

Previously the city used the arms below, whih only differ in the crown. Those arms were granted on September 10, 1934.
