Origin/meaning

These are the original arms of the city, which can be found in the documents starting from the 14th century. The city walls show the urban character of the settlement, the bishop's mitre displays the founder and owner of the town, the Bishops of Włocławek.

In 1950, due to the christian-catholic character of the arms, it was changed by the communist authorities into the form shown below. The mitre was removed, and the arms with half-lion, half-eagle, symbolizing the province of Kujawy, were added.

On the three differnet versions of the arms with the provincial arms, the small shield differs between all three, see below.
