Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on November 24, 1994.

The arms combine elements from the arms of the territories to which the district historically belonged : the lion in the left half symbolises the lions of the Dukes of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, the Counts of Orlamünde and the Lords of Gleichen, the wheel in the first quarter is the arms of the State of Mainz, and in the third quarter the apples are canting for the city of Apolda and were used by the governors of Apolda.
