Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on September 19, 1983.

The arms of Werndorf display a crest. This is the historical crest of the duchy of Styria. This is partly, because the Duke of Styria had possessions here in the Middle Ages. The main reason for this coat of arms is, however, that the Landesaufgebot met at Werndorf. The Aufgebot was the medieval equivalent of full mobilisation in times of war. All the duke's vassals were obliged to fight; plus, as landowners they had to send and equip men on behalf of their manors. These obligations varied according to a landowner's means.
