Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1937.

The arms show in the first and fourth quarter the arms of the Lords of Westerholt and in the two other quarters miner's tools. Westerholt was for many centuries a small village around the castle of the Lords of Wesertholt. In the early 20th century the village rapidly developed due to the mining in the area, and became a city in 1938.
