Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1570, at the same time as the city rights. Originally the arms were only granted to Heinrichsstadt, a part of the present city. The arms were used by the whole city since 1747. The horse is the horse of the State of Braunschweig (see the arms of the State Niedersachsen), now with saddle and reins. The pillar is also taken from the arms of the Dukes of Braunschweig, with the exception that the peacock feathers, which are present on the ducal arms are omitted.

The great arms show two angels as supporters, the one on the left side dressed in the black and white of Hohenzollern, the right one in the red and gold of Braunschweig. Duke Julius, who granted the arms was married to Hedwig of Hohenzollern. The supporters are not used often at present, but were used on seals until 1952.
