Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on December 10, 2008.

The black lion is the arms of the Margraves of Meissen, who ruled the area for many centuries. The lion was also part of the arms of the two previous districts. The two wavy pales symbolise the Elbe and Mulde rivers in the district. The two blue pales are also a symbol for the arms of the other important historical rulers, the Margraves of Landsberg of the Wettin dynasty.
