The lion leaning on a rock symbolizes the power and strength of the land, its inhabitants, who for centuries defended their independence from strangers. At the same time, the lion (lev in Ukrainian) refers to the name of the city of [[Lviv]] and the name of its first ruler - Prince Lev Danilovich.
 
The crown on the lion's head indicates the capital's role of the region in the Kingdom of Galicia and Volhynia (18th century).
 
Oak and laurel branches on both sides of the coat of arms symbolize the valor and glory of the region.
