8TH FIGHTER SQUADRON, US AIR FORCE
History: Constituted as 8 Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor) on 20 November 1940. Activated on 15 January 1941. Redesignated: 8 Fighter Squadron on 15 May 1942; 8 Fighter Squadron, Single Engine, on 20 August 1943; 8 Fighter Squadron, Two Engine, on 6 November 1944; 8 Fighter Squadron, Single Engine, on 8 January 1946; 8 Fighter Squadron, Jet Propelled, on 1 May 1948; 8 Fighter Squadron, Jet, on 10 August 1948; 8 Fighter-Bomber Squadron on 1 February 1950; 8 Tactical Fighter Squadron on 8 July 1958; 8 Fighter Squadron on 1 November 1991. Combat in Southwest Pacific, c. 20 April 1942-4 August 1945. Combat in Korea, 2 July 1950-27 July 1953. Combat in Southeast Asia, c. 12 May-2 October 1972. Portions of the squadron deployed to Southwest Asia to fly combat air patrol, 19 September-19 December 1991.
