The arms were officially granted on April 24, 1937.

The arms are largely based on the arms of [[Marl]], granted one year earlier, and shows the same symbolism. The cross and the colours are those of the State of Köln, the miner's tools refer to mining and the barrel-iron is taken from the arms of the Von Loe family.
