Otterberg received city rights in 1581 and the oldest seals date from the same time. All seals showed a shield with three squirrels. The squirrels are derived from the arms of the Cistercian monastery of Otterberg. The arms were officially granted in 1842 with a helmet and crest. The crest showing a squirrel between buffalo horns. In 1890 the arms were confirmed.
