Stemma di Asti

Official blazon

Di rosso alla croce d’argento. Motto: Aste Nitet Mundo Sancto Custode Secundo.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on August 18, 1896.

The arms of Asti are derived from the medieval Guelf party. In the 12th century the North of Italy was divided in among two parties, the Guelf (Welfen) party, who supported the pope and who used a silver cross, and the Gibbelin party, who supported the Emperor and used a red cross. The cross remained the arms of the city ever since.
