Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on December 5, 1963.
The arms show a pair of scales and a cross as symbols of the patron saint of the local abbey and the town, St. Michael. T
The black symbol is the old village symbol, it is not quite clear what it represents. The first time it appeares on a seal of a local sheriff in 1483, and in the 16th century on border-stones. In the 17th century it was placed on a shield and thus transformed to the arms. It was used as such on the seal of the local court in 1736.
The old arms |
The symbols of St. Michael were added in 1963 and mainly represent the monastery which, until 1565 was of major importance to the town and surrounding area.
