Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 30, 1953.

The two keys in the arms were taken from the arms of the medieval Lords of Gittelde (known from 1154-1626), who played a major role in the local history. The coin in the centre of the arms indicates that Gittlede for a long time had its own mint, due to the rich mines near the town.
