Origin/meaning

The division symbolises the Serra da Piedade; which houses the Sanctuary of the Patron Saint of Minas Gerais, Nossa Senhora da Piedade, as well as the Serra do Curral and in general the mountains of the State. The blue refers to the capital of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, and the sky.

The crown, or the crown of King Jesus is a reference to the Cathedral idealized by the first bishop and archbishop of the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte, Dom Antônio dos Santos Cabral. The fleur-de-lys is a symbol for St. Mary and the symbol of the Evangelization Star. The Crown Redemptive Cross links earth and sky.
