Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 16, 1958.

The village got city rights in 1346 from Duke Lüdwig of Bavaria. The rather strange arms were used on the seal of the city in the early 18th century and later. The origin of the symbols is not known. Before the present arms the city used in the seals the arms of the counts of Wied, with five bends. The counts of Wied ruled the city from 1357 until the 17th century.
