Official blazon

In Silber eine rote Burg mit goldenem Tor in der Mauer und zwei spitz bedachten Zinnentürmen; zwischen ihnen schwebend ein gespaltener Schild: vorn in Silber ein halber roter Adler am Spalt, hinten neunmal geteilt von Schwarz und Gold, überdeckt mit schrägem, gebogenem grünen Rautenkranz.

Origin/meaning

The arms show the Lauenburg castle, built in 1181 by Duke Bernhard I of Sachsen, who named himself after the new castle. His arms are shown between the towers. The village around the castle grew rapidly and received city rights in the 13^th century. The oldest seals already showed the present arms, whose composition has not changed since. The shape of the castle, however, has changed considerably during the centuries.
