District (Kreis) : Herzogtum Lauenburg

Wappen von Lauenburg

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms show the Lauenburg castle, built in 1181 by Duke Bernhard I of Sachsen, who named himself after the new castle. His arms are shown between the towers. The village around the castle grew rapidly and received city rights in the 13th century. The oldest seals already showed the present arms, whose composition has not changed since. The shape of the castle, however, has changed considerably during the centuries.
