Origin/meaning :
Borkum is an island, which became an official city in 1950. The arms were granted in 1951 and symbolise the whaling, which was very important in the last centuries, and the lighthouse standing above the North Sea.

The municipality uses the arms with the motto 'Mediis Tranquillis in Undis', see below.
