Origin/meaning

The arms were for the first time granted on June 25, 1654 by Joannes Casimirus at the same time as the city rights. The city rights and arms were requested by Maria Ludvika, Queen of Poland. She descended from the Princes of Gonzaga, from Mantua in Italy.

The arms of the Gonzaga family showed a black eagle. The small breastshield shows the French fleur-de-lis, as the family was related to the French Royal family. The eagle was made white in reference to the white eagle of Poland.The arms remained unchanged until the late 18^th century, when they were described with a red breastshield with three double lilies. Why the colours were changed is not known.

In the early 20^th century the arms were generally shown as a black eagle in a silver field (the original family arms), with a red breastshield with a silver lily. The colours were probably changed to minimise reference to Poland and France.

The old arms were restored and officially granted on May 23, 1994.
