Štrba (Erb, znak)

Official blazon

V červenom štíte pri spodnom okraji tri zlaté hviezdy prevýšené ramenom v striebornom, zlatolemovanom rukáve, držiacim súčasne dva zlaté, rozšírenými pätkami zakončené kríže - ondrejský a latinský.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 18, 1993.

The arms are based on a 19th century seal of the village. The hand with the crosses refers to St. Andrew, the local patron saint (saltire) and the church itself (straight cross). The oldest known seal of the village dates from the 16th century and shows St. Andrew holding a cross (see below). A church devoted to St. Andrew is already mentioned in 1306.

Štrba (Erb, znak)

The 16th century seal

The meaning of the stars is not known, they may just have been a 19th century way of decorating the seal. According to legend, the village was founded in 1286 by Bohumír and his sons, who also built a church here. The three stars thus should symbolise the three sons and their families. A third explanation is that the three stars refer to the three villages in the municipality, Štrba, Štrbské Pleso and Tatranská Štrba.
