ABRENE

Now part of Pitalova (Russia)

Arms (crest) of Abrene

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

Abrene was an old castle of Latgali people (Latvian tribe) in the Talava land. In 1933 the town, called then Jaunlatgale, got city rights.

In 1938 the city was renamed back to Abrene and got arms. The horse shoes depict the horse markets in the region, more specifically the one of Abrene. The horses of the ancient Latvian region of Latgale were famous in Latvia. In that country horse shoes also bring good luck.

During the Soviet occupation Abrene was transferred from Latvia to Russia and renamed to Pitalova.
