Country : Canada
Denomination : Roman Catholic

Established : 1674 as Diocese of Québec
Promoted 1806 to Archdiocese of Québec

Arms (crest) of Archdiocese of Québec

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The current arms of the archdiocese were designed and adopted in 2022.

The first quarter shows the Immaculate Virgin, crowned with stars as on the main picture in the cathedral. The second quarter also refers to Mary because Mary is the morning star, the one through which we have access to the light of Christ, the one that sailors call the star of the sea (Maria Stella), the star that guided the Magi to Bethlehem.

The fourth quarter shows Saint Louis, King of France, bearing scepter and crown, which clearly recalls the historical link with France. The third quarter shows a fleur-de-lis, taken from the arms of the French Kings and whose three branches can symbolize both the Holy Trinity and the three theological virtues: faith, hope and charity. The fleur-de-lis is also part of the official flag of Quebec.

Blue is the Marian color as well as the color of the kings of France and especially that of Quebec. The golden color symbolizes the light.

Previously the Archdiocese use arms adopted during in 1684. It was based on the seal of the diocese of Québec and showed the full figures of Mary and Saint Louis.
