Origin/meaning

The arms were officially adopted on June 12, 2003.

The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city (city rights were granted in 1268), which probably dates from the 13th century. The seal already showed the towers as a symbol for te city, the lion and eagle under a crown and a cross. The lion and the eagle are taken from the arms of the Duchy of Inowrocław to which the city belonged at the time. The meaning of the cross is not clear. It has been stated that th cross was added to the seal when the city was conquered by the Teutonic Knights (1322-1344). The cross remained in the seals and arms until 1920. In the 18th and 19th century the two heads were no longer recognised and replaced in the seals by some unclear symbols. Only at the end of the 19th century the heads were restored.

As can be seen from the different images above and below, the basic composition remained the same, but there have been many variations in the details and colours of the arms.
