Bramstedt received town rights before 1400 and city rights in 1910. At the same time the prefix Bad was added.

The oldest know seal dates from the late 14<sup>th</sup> century and shows the nettle-leaf arms of the Duchy of Holstein, to which the city at the time belonged. In 1877 the town adopted arms with the so-called Roland of Bramstedt, the Roland being a historical figure, his statue can be seen in the town square, see image below.
