Origin/meaning
Säckingen was founded around 1250 and the oldest seal dates from the same time. The seal showed the local patron saint, St. Fridolin as a pilgrim. This composition remained in use until the late 16th century. Until around 1800 the seals show part of the saint, and in the base a canting bag (Säckel). After 1806, when the city became part of Baden, the bag alone was used in the arms. The colours changed widely during the centuries. The present colours are based on the 17th century combination.
