Origin/meaning

Wimpfen received city rights in 1220 and became an imperial city in the early 14th century. The eagle and key first appear on the seal of the city from the early 14th century. The key is derived from the arms of Worms, as the city was founded in an area bought by the Dukes of Staufen from the State of Worms. All later seals and images until 1803 showed the same arms.

In 1803 the city became part of Hessen and the arms were changed. The new arms showed the old arms on the left half and the striped lion of Hessen in the right half. When the city became part of Baden-Württemberg the old arms were restored.
