BALBIERŠKIS

County : Kaunas
Municipality : Prienai

Arms (crest) of Balbieriškis
Official blazon
Lithuanian blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 1, 2001.

The town is named after the Barbiera rivulet, which is in turn named after the Barbiera (also called Balbiera) rocks in the Nemunas river. Those rocks were dangerous for ships navigating the Nemunas, until the hydro-electric-power plant of Kaunas was built, and the shoal was drowned.

The indented base refers to the Barbiera rocks as the origin of the town name, and the sailboat refers to trade over the Nemunas river, which was important for the development of the town.

In 1847 arms with St. Vincent were designed (but maybe never used), but the Lithuanian Heraldry Commission decided that these arms had neither any relation with modern Balbieriskis nor can be considered as the historical arms. Hence new arms were designed, which were granted in 2001.
