Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1602 by Bishop Heinrich Julius of Halberstadt. The official documents named the animal a leopard, meaning a heraldic leopard, which is more a walking lion. The lion is the symbol of the Welfen family, Dukes of Braunschweig, who ruled the area at the time. The painter of the arms, however, painted a natural leopard, which has been used as the arms ever since.
