Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1889 and the new arms on July 24, 1959.

The old arms (see below) show a sun above the sea. The lower part symbolises the importance for fishing to the municipality. The sun in the older arms had no special meaning, in the new arms it symbolises the midnight sun. Bodø is the first city above the polar circle in Norway.
