Oorsprong/verklaring
Het wapen is een afgeleide van het wapen van Duiveland, met in het schildhoofd misschien een sprekend symbool van de ambachtsheer van Bruinisse, Paulus van Hertsbeke (1566-1611).
Het wapen werd in ieder geval al als heerlijkheidswapen gevoerd in de 17e eeuw, waarbij echter de zwarte geren van rood waren.
Waarom dit later is gewijzigd in zwart is niet bekend. Bij Verburcht lopen de geren door tot de schildrand en zijn de kleuren omgedraaid. Dit laatste is meer in overeenstemming met de andere wapens op Duiveland. Bij de aanvraag van het wapen in 1815 werd verder geen achtergrond gegeven, alleen dat het het oude heerlijkheidswapen was.

The arms are a combination of the arms of the island of Duiveland and a grazing deer. The deer is probably taken from the canting arms of Paulus van Hertsbeke (deer-brook), Lord of Bruinisse in the 16th century. The arms were used since the early 17th century until 1815 for the manor/estate of Bruinisse.
