Origin/meaning

The small green shield in the upper right corner shows a harness, as a symbol for the two early settlers Manuel Dias and Domingos Borges who conquered the area in 1703. The middle shield shows an escarbuncle as a symbol for the mining in the area, especially for gemstones. The left shield shows an image of the local church, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, one of the largest in the State of Minas Gerais.

The lower part shows the outline of the Serra do Caraça mountains, around the city. The animal is a local type of wolf (Crhysocyon brachyurus). The lower left corner shows a symbol for tourism, indicating the importance of tourism for the city.
