Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The barred shiels is taken from the arms of the Borromeo family arms, as St. Carlo Borromeo (charles) is the patron saint of the bishop. The bend on the Borromeo arms has been replaced by a chevron, to symbolise the carpenter's square of St. Joseph, the patron saint of the San Diego cathedral.
The two pierced hands are a symbol for St. Francis of Assisi, the second patron of the bishop. The hands also refer to the Franciscan monks, who were the first missionaries in California.
The lion's head is taken to represent the mother of the bishop Annie Farrell, and is taken from some (unrelated) Farrell family arms.
