CLANWILLIAM

Province : Western Cape
District Municipality : West Coast
Municipality : Cederberg

Municipality

Arms (crest) of Clanwilliam

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on February 13, 1964.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on October 22, 1976.

In these arms the wavy fess represents the Olifants River, which lies near the town. When the first explorers (dispatched by the Dutch East India Company but led by a Dane name Olof Bergh) arrived in the Olifants valley, it was inhabited by herds of elephant, long since shot out by hunters.

The crest represents the orange orchards that are a feature of the river valley from Citrusdal (south of Clanwilliam) to Bulshoek (to the north). It could also be a reference to the House of Orange, which used an orange tree as a family symbol.
