Origin/meaning

The two griffin heads are taken from a (non-related) Irish Ryan family (which used three heads). The lower griffin is replaced by a wheatsheaf, a canting symbol for Wheaton, where the bishop was pastor of the St. Michael parish.

The wavy bar is taken from the arms of the diocese of Joliet.

The motto is taken from Psalm 136.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969.
