old arms (seen in Bishop begin's arms) : Two green oak trees for Oakland and the red and gold of the Peralta family arms. The basic colors of gold and red commemorate the heritage of the original Spanish land owners and liturgically the colors symbolize gold for the Divinity of Christ and Red for His humanity.
The chevron wavy line of separation represents the hill terrain and watery coastline over which the bishop's jurisdiction extends. The gold heart and cross are symbols of St. Francis de Sales, patron of Oakland's first cathedral.
