Origin/meaning

Dornhan received city rights in 1256 from Duke Ludwig von Teck. In 1380 it became a possession of Württemberg, but at the same time the monastery of Alpirsbach owned many rights. The oldest seals, which date from the 15th century, thus showed a divided shield with a crosier for the monastery and the three deer antlers of Württemberg.

From 1530 onwards the seals and images of the arms show a shield with the three deer antlers and on the left part the canting rooster on a thorn branch (Dorn=thorn, ha(h)n=rooster). These arms remained unchanged (except that in the 18th century the two halves were exchanged) until 1958 when the deer antlers were finally removed. In unofficial books and images the antlers had already often been removed, but not in the official seals and statements of the city.
