FRANCIS RAYMOND SHEA
Born: December 4, 1913
Deceased: August 18, 1994
Bishop of Evansville, 1969 - 1989
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The fleur-de-lis is part of the coat-of-arms of a Shea family of Kerry, Ireland and thus used as a symbol for the bishop. The crescent with gold and blue checks is the coat-of-arms of St. Francis Xavier, baptismal patron of Bishop Shea.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
