GEORGE JOSEPH FINNIGAN

Born : February 22, 1885
Deceased : August 14, 1932

Bishop of Helena, 1927-1932

Arms (crest) of George Joseph Finnigan

Official blazon

Silver, between three trefoils gules a lion sable charged on the shoulder with an escutcheon: Azure, two anchors saltireways surmounted by a long cross, all silver.

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The lion with the trefoils are taken from an Irish Finnigan family coat of arms to symbolise the last name of the bishop. The inescutcheon shows the arms of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, to which the bishop belonged.
