The arms show three canting pikes (Hecht = pike) and two wheels derived from the arms of the city of Mainz. A pike already appears on the oldest known seal, dating from 1597. In the 17<sup>th</sup> century the three fish appear in a star shape. The wheels of Mainz first appear on the local seals in the early 19<sup>th</sup> century. In the late 19<sup>th</sup> century the fish were shown as a letter H, but in the early 20<sup>th</sup> century the star formation was restored. <br>

Still in 1956 the arms were shown in the colours of Mainz in the H-shape (see below).
