District (Kreis) : Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge
Additions: 1973 Waitzdorf; 1994 Ehrenberg (1974 Cunnersdorf), Goßdorf, Lohsdorf, Rathewalde (1972 Zeschnig-Hohburkersdorf (1965 Hohburkersdorf, Zeschnig)), Ulbersdorf

Wappen von Hohnstein/Arms (crest) of Hohnstein
Official blazon
German

Unter einem dreiblättrigen grünen Kleeblatt in Gold (Gelb) ein nach rechts schreitender rot bezungter schwarzer Hund.

English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The origin of the dog is not clear, it may be canting from Hund-stein (Hund is dog). The dog already appeared on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from the 16th century. The seal also showed the trefoil, the origin thereof is not known. Later seals show a forest behind the dog and even later seals only show the dog. The colours were not known. Hupp based the arms on the latest seals, whereas the city in the 20th century returned to the oldest seal.

Seal of Hohnstein

Seal from around 1900
Wappen von Hohnstein/Coat of arms (crest) of Hohnstein
