Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 21, 1957.

The arms are based on the arms on the oldest seal of the village, known since 1581. The seal shows a lion holding the arms of the D'Autel family, Lords of Vogelzang from 1436-1700, to which also the village of Houthalen belonged. The lion is maybe taken from the arms of the van Knyphausen family, as in 1579 Jan, baron van Innhausen en Knyphausen, married Oriande d'Autel.
